I am an avid reader!! I LOVE to read! And I love bookmarks. I have a fun collection actually.
Unfortunately, neither of my kids have developed an eagerness to read. I don't know how that happened since I've encouraged them since they were very little, and set a good example by letting them see me read often....LOL
Well, here's the really funny part to how this bookmark came into existence. My oldest graduated from H.S. this past May and is heading off to college in a week and 4 days. He DOES NOT like to read. Well, for one of his General Classes that he's required to take, he received a book in the mail that had to be read by the time he started his first class. Homework? Over the summer? You've got to be kidding!!!
I LOVE IT!!! Anyway, he was just using a ripped piece of paper to keep his place marked. So, I made this simple, and not *frou-frou*, bookmark to keep track of where he stopped...which was only about 20 pages in. Who can stop after only 20 pages? Are you kidding me?
I thought these little magnetized bookmarks would make a great gift from a teacher to his/her students. They're easy to make, and use very little paper. I've found that the magnetized bookmarks stay put the best. Love 'em. So I just cut a 2 5/8" x 5 1/4" inch rectangle of black with an 1/8" smaller dp piece, folded it in half. I put Basicgrey Magnetic Snaps on the inside and put a circle on top that would stick out of the book; making it easier to find your page. That's it...You could use different colors, scrap pieces of cardstock, and a variety of Fonts.
To make this circle, I used my JustRite stamper!! LOVE this tool. To get the different colors, I used the Wooden Stamp Mount. The three sets I used for this circle are: Curlz Font "Fun Borders" for the border, Special Occasions Font for "READ", and the Small Letters for the year. I inked up the image with Chocolate Chip (Stampin' Up) and colored every other border circle and the year with black.
Just Rite has a whole bunch of new sets now too, and Michelle at Stamper's Dream will be carrying them really soon. They are so much fun, and are so versatile!!
Supplies:
Stamps - JustRite Stamper Kits
Paper - Kaisercraft dp, Black, Suede Dark Brown (Prismatics), Neenah Classic Natural
Ink - Chocolate Chip (SU), Black marker
Accessories - Magnetic snaps (Basicgrey), Nestabilities

Ya know, my oldest was never into reading...until she was assigned a summer project to read a book before classes started. Know what, she likes to read now. It got her into it. Maybe it'll help your oldest??
Anyhooooo...great project! Definitely masculine and something he can use.
This is wonderful -- caught my attention on SCS!!! Love the idea, and now I see I need to order those magnetic things -- thanks for the link! I have one who won't take his nose out of a book, and one who won't put his nose in -- LOL!!! They are ALL so different!!!
