Hello, hello, hello!!! I am hopping along with some super creative and fun Power Poppy Design Team members today to encourage participation in Kathy's Racoosin's 30 day Coloring Challenge. This challenge is designed to encourage you to color something (anything), with whatever type medium you choose, for 10 minutes each day for the next 30 days. I color most every day, but I always forget, or am too shy, to share my progress. It's something I am working on.
I actually totally forgot to take some progressive shots of the progress of this card, and I'm sorry I did. It was quite the process for how it got here. I will show you, however, the original finished card at the end of this post. I kept looking at it, and looking at it, and something felt off. I asked my trustworthy daughter (she is ALWAYS honest if I ask her what she thinks about a project), and she didn't like that the heart matched the background.
Before I get more into the story, let me explain this card first. I started by creating the background with Power Poppy's Big Sexy Leaves background stamp. I inked it up randomly with 3 different Distress Oxide inks: Forest Moss, Gathered Twigs, and Fired Brick. I then liberally spritzed it with water and stamped it onto watercolor paper using my Misti. The Misti was a handy tool because after I heat set the wet image, with my heat tool, I was able to stamp perfectly over the watercolored image with Tuxedo Black Memento ink giving it the look you see here.
Next, I colored up a variety of flowers, from the new Power Poppy set called Abundant Petals, and arranged them in a bouquet. I had colored the open tulip 3 different ways, but none of them made it to the bouquet because I just didn't think the colors worked together.
After arranging the flowers the way I wanted them, I adhered them to the card and added a sweet little sentiment flag using a sentiment from the Abundant Petals set.
Oh, and I should add...I used Copics for all the coloring, and added E31 to all the flowers and leaves to tone down the colors so they would flow better with the muted background.
Here's a look at the card before I changed the heart:
So, that sums up my coloring project for today. I hope you are inspired to get coloring!!
Before I include the links to the Power Poppy designers participating in today's hop, I have one more thing I want to share with you.
I thought you might like to know that Marcella is offering a special on the Burst of Kindness Stamp set and the digital Spring Meadow Bouquet. It's a sweet deal!!

Coloring flowers is always a challenge and you did beautifully! Love all your shading and blending. WOW!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! And I love the Abundant Petals extra flowers... The fun thing about having extras is you can make a whole extra card! Happens to me all the time.
ReplyDeleteYour coloring is magnificent! I love the boldness of the flowers against the heart. The background is just stunning.
ReplyDeleteThis card is wonderful. I love the colors and the techniques. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThese cards are so pretty!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely. I like both versions of the card. Thank you for such beautiful ideas.
ReplyDeletelove you colored in the flowers - so pretty:)
ReplyDeleteI love it! Your daughter was spot on, but how did you do the wood look on the heart? It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis is really gorgeous Tosha. I am with your daughter on this, the brown showing behind the heart really showcases the bouquet better. With the second pic, it is a bit busier.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colouring for sure, well done!
You are doing an amazing job with your colouring, well done! Gorgeous creations!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteYour design is amazing and coloring also very beautiful

ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty card! Your coloring is so good! This is my first time visiting your blog...I'll be back! Thank you so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove this card! I actually like the first one a lot, but can see your daughter's point. I wonder what it would look like with a heart shaped overlay of velum. Either way -- gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteTosha! Your cards are gorgeous. I love that wooden heart! It really makes the beautifully colored flowers pop!
ReplyDeleteHow recognizable, I also regularly ask my daughter what she thinks of it and I always get an honest answer. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I don't. In your case, your daughter was right, your heart disappeared in the background. I loved it how you fixed that. Gorgeous card, thank you for showing this.
ReplyDeleteI love the over stamped background! It is the perfect backdrop for your gorgeous card! It is so unique and just wonderful!
ReplyDeleteTotally awesome card! I love the colors you chose & the darker heart!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful card & inspiration for all of us following along! Thanks for sharing. ❤

ReplyDeleteStunning! Such a gorgeous card with beautiful coloring. Amazing background.
ReplyDeletewonderful card. The blending of the colors is awesome
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing how you did the big leaves in the background. I love the effect and would never have thought of reapplying the black over the watercolor effect distress inks. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cards. Love the finished colouring even if we didn’t get to see the process.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful card. Love the colors.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing....
Your card is lovely! Glad you daughter gives you her honest opinion. Love the change you made for the background.
ReplyDeleteThis is just gorgeous and I love the deep brown tones that make the flowers stand out.
ReplyDeletelovely card, Tosha - and your daughter was right - your beautiful flowers were lost on that background.
ReplyDeleteThe Red Haired Lass: The wood heart is decorative paper by Simple Stories. I just diecut another heart, cut it so it could slide under the already glued down floral arrangement and glued it over the top.
ReplyDeleteCyndy Rogers: I tried overlaying vellum but it wasn't enough of a difference to contrast the flowers. Looks like we both had similar ideas though. My projects rarely turn out how the idea starts in my head. haha
Fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThe flowers REALLY POP! I love how you did the background to make them show up!
ReplyDeleteOh Tosha, I love everything you make and this is no exception! I do like the change to the heart and those blooms are just stunning!! You do such gorgeous work!!! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a gorgeous card and love how you arranged and made the heart as it was wood! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSuch lovely coloured images! I love how you mounted those florals on your backgrounds!

ReplyDeleteFascinating technique you used for the background. I wouldn't have thought to go that route, but it's gorgeous. And then the bouquet on top is colored so nicely. Thanks for sharing with us (including the flowers that will, I'm sure, show up in some other bouquet)!

ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous way to create a background like that, three distressed inks and then added black on the top. I am definitely going to try this technique. Thank you for the inspiration to do so. x
ReplyDeleteYou know what? I like both versions. Your background leaves look so cool Tosh. A great way to play off the pop of colour in the flowers. Great arrangment too!

ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty bunch of flowers grouped together next to the heart.
ReplyDeleteOh my this stamp set is stunning and your card is even more stunning. I love the design, the background and the wood heart. Love this card. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteOh, Tosh, I know what you mean about a second opinion from someone who will tell you "like it is!" My DH is great for that! And I agree that the woodgrain heart was the right decision to make the flowers pop! The background is gorgeous, and I love the rich, earthy colors and how you've colored the flowers so exquisitely! The are amazing...and it's so interesting that you used E31 to tone down the colors...makes sense! It's a gorgeous card, and I love your work! Hugs and love, sweet friend! xoxo
